When Do You Have the Time to Write?

I was asked this question quite recently. At that moment, I answered like any normal person would, justifying how I squeeze out a few minutes here and there to work on various questions. The answer that immediately came to mind was far shorter.

I don't have time to write.

Not at all. I'm in college full-time, and even though I take all my classes online, it still takes up a significant portion of my week. I officially work two part-time jobs as a caretaker and an art instructor. Unofficially, I clean houses for friends and family members, and I pick up any little task that pays more than $15 an hour. My boyfriend of the past two and a half years is in the military, which often feels like a mini job itself. (A delightful and entirely worthwhile job. Army schedules are just unpredictable.)

None of this is intended to be a complaint; at my most busy, I am often my most fulfilled. I am the type of person who would rather spend 40 hours a week doing 40 different things than just settling on one. However, I very quickly realized that I would never have time for anything. Making time, though, is a far more reasonable goal.

I make time to write. Especially when I'm not in the thick of marketing a book, my free time is often usually used to take the stories that are floating around in my mind and put them on paper. It works out well, in my opinion. I always have something to daydream about, and by the time a year has passed, I have something tangible to show. That being said, this book still took me a year to write; professional authors can usually work much faster than that. But I'm not a professional author, and this is not my full-time job.

I don't have time. Honestly, I'm not even especially good at time management. But I quickly learned to excel at making time. Well, that, and I have an especially hard time sitting still. Maybe in other stages of my life, it won't be this easy. But for now, I'm going to write little stories and see if anything ever comes of it.
